Saturday, May 4, 2024

The Kena Derby is a fun temple event designed to raise important funds for Kena Shriners and our clubs and units. The Kena Derby is held on the same day as the Kentucky Derby. The party simulates being at The Kentucky Derby and is open to nobles, ladies and their guests. Admission is free.

The Race

Each race features 6 horses. Clubs, units and individuals are invited and encouraged to be “an owner” for the day and enter a horse. The entry fee is $55 per horse. Horses entering multiple races must pay the $55 entry fee each time. Owners can create and decorate a stick horse as a part of their entry or “rent a horse” onsite for a small fee - $10. Each race will have a possible total purse of $300. The owner of the winning horse in each race will get half the money and the temple will get the other half.

The Grand Prize Race will be the seventh and final race and feature the winning horse from each of the 6 races. There will be no entry fee for this race. The winning owner will receive a cash prize.

There will also be prizes for the best decorated horse. Horses will be placed in the “paddock” and mason jars will be placed in front of each horse. Event goers will vote for their favorite horse with donations. The winning horse will be the horse with the most donations in their jar. The best horse will receive a special recognition.

Owner for a Day

Be the front runner or the dark horse – but sign up TODAY to be one of ONLY 36 individuals with a horse IN the race!

There will be 6 races on Kena Derby Day. Each race will feature 6 horses. Clubs, units and individuals are invited and encouraged to be “an owner” for the day and enter a horse.

The entry fee is $55 per horse. Horses entering multiple races must pay the $55 entry fee each time.

You do not need to be present to have a horse in the race – you can assign a jockey for the day!

Owners are encouraged to create and decorate a stick horse as a part of their entry or “rent a horse” onsite for a small fee - $10.

Each race will have a total purse of $300. The owner of the winning horse in each race will get half the money and the temple will get the other half.

The winner of each of the six races will qualify for the Grand Prize Race which will be the seventh and final race of the day. There will be no entry fee for this race. The winning owner will receive $150.

There will also be prizes for the best decorated horse. The winner selected through donations placed in a jar.

Betting

In addition, there will be betting stations available for individuals to support their favorite horse. Here is how the betting works:

  • Tickets will be sold for $5.00 each.

  • 50% of the pot will be split among tickets purchased on behalf of the winning horse.

  • The other 50% will go to the temple.

For example:

In Race 1, 80 tickets are sold for a total purse of $400. $200 would go to Kena, the other $200 would be split among the winning ticket holders. For the purposes of this example, let’s say Horse 2 won and there were 10 tickets sold to that horse. Each winning ticket would be worth $20.

The winning horse will be chosen through a dice game. A race host will be responsible for the rolling of the dice. Each horse will be given a number that corresponds to one side of the dice. Each time their number is rolled, the horse will advance one space. The first horse to have their number rolled 10 times will cross the finish line first and be declared the winner of the race.

Reserved Seating

Make sure you are up close and personal with all the action. Reserve your spot today!

VIP space(s) can be reserved for nominal donations to the temple. Spaces will be filled on a first come first served basis and your name will be affixed to your space. Reserved tables (table with 6 chairs) are $100. Trackside seating is $10 per seat.

Get Dressed Up

Nobles and ladies are asked to put on their finest race attire. Prizes will be given to the Dapperest Dan and the ladies will have a hat contest. Those wishing to enter these contests will need to have their picture taken at the registration table. Event goers will vote for their favorites with donations. The winners will be the individuals with the most donations in their jar. Each individual will receive a special recognition. Winners will be announced around 6:30 p.m.
