Shriners Hospitals for Children®

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is a network of 22 hospitals founded in 1922 by Shriners which provides children up to age 18 with specialty burn care, orthopaedics, cleft lip and palate, and spinal cord injury needs, regardless of a family's ability to pay. Children are eligible for care at Shriners Hospitals for Children® if there is a reasonable possibility they can benefit from the specialized services available. Acceptance is based solely on a child’s medical needs.

The sooner a child with burn injuries reaches a Shriners Hospitals for Children® that specializes in burn treatment, the better the chances of recovery. In an emergency, the referring physician treating a child with burn injuries should telephone the chief of staff at the Shriners Hospitals for Children® in Boston, Cincinnati, Galveston or Sacramento and indicate that there is a patient needing emergency burn care. Shriners Hospitals for Children® includes the United States (including Puerto Rico), Canada, the Republic of Panama and Mexico. Transportation needs are handled on a case-by-case basis. The hospital's care coordinator will assist families with transportation details.

Shriners International operates 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children® throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Four Hospitals treat children with severe burn injuries. Three Hospitals have the only spinal cord injury units in the nation specifically for children and adolescents and 19 of the Hospitals treat children with problems of the bones, joints and muscles. Annually, Shriners Hospitals admit over 22,000 orthopedic patients, 3,300 burns patients and provide over 260,000 outpatient and outreach clinic visits, regardless of the family's ability to pay for this state of the art medical care.
