If you know me, you know I love a good purse. But something you may not know about me, is that I am deaf. Since I was five years old, I have  relied on reading lips and using special hearing devices. In 2001, I received my first prosthetic implant, and in 2009 I underwent surgery for bilateral cochlear implants, which means I have implants in both ears. These procedures were very  painful and frightening, but I’ll never forget the first time I turned them on and could hear. My life was changed forever.

I can relate to how our Shriners kids feel when they receive and put on their custom orthotic or prosthetic for the first time. A child who may not have ever dreamed they can run or play, can now do that and a lot more.

Shriners Children’s Pediatric Orthotics and  Prosthetic Services (POPS) designs, fits and manufactures orthotics and prosthetics for children and while it may seem like this is just about measurements and mechanics, it’s not. It’s about sharing hopes and dreams and providing an orthotic or prosthetic with the fit and function a child needs at that moment.

This year I am asking you to please support the First Lady’s project and our efforts to help kids get the orthotics and prosthetics they need to reach their full potential.
